Last Saturday we went on a bike ride to the other side of town to visit the Palmiarnia in Park Wilsona, named after US President Woodrow Wilson.  He is a popular guy in Polish history, since one his “Fourteen Points” was the re-establishment of Poland as an independent state following World War I.

The Palmiarnia (Palm House) is a huge greenhouse originally built in 1929.  It has over 7,000 species of plants, each grouped by their natural habitat.  Since it was slightly overgrown, it felt like walking through a jungle.  I was ready for a monkey to swoop down and steal my camera.

Into the jungle

Here’s a giant agave plant, just like we had in our yard in California (minus the sidewinders).  For those of you that don’t know, this is where tequila comes from:

Interspersed amongst all the plants were different animals (in cages, thank goodness!):  frogs, lizards, parrots, snails, giant pythons, and turtles.

Lizards

There was very full koi pond too.  Perhaps this is what they do with the unsold Christmas Carp…

These chickens(?) were the only animals with free run of the garden:

Chickens?

As we were leaving we could hear them crowing like roosters.  They were making quite a racket the same time the tour group was passing through.

So it turned out to be an interesting little adventure!
