We decided to make our first car trip to the town of Kórnik, which is about 25 minutes southeast of Poznań.  Kórnik’s main attraction is its castle (zamek in Polish), which was originally built in late 14th century and updated/remodeled in the 1800s.  Which explains why it looks like two castles mashed together on the outside.  There is a large arboretum on the property, which was beautiful with the leaves changing color very nicely.

The inside was amazing and had interesting items covering multiple genres.  Artwork?  Check.  Impressive architectural details?  Check.  Historic weaponry and armor?  Check.  Necklace made of human teeth?  Check.  (Seriously.)  The wood floors are so ornate, they make you put slippers on over your shoes to walk around, causing everyone to slide about like 4 year olds on ice skates.  I almost fell on my butt until I decided to just shuffle everywhere.  The only sign that was written in Polish, English and German was the one reminding you to remove your slippers before going down the stairs.  No international lawsuits for them!

Most roads route you through small towns (think state routes in the US), so we went though plenty when we drove from Warsaw to Poznań.  We took a walk around the small town of Bnin, just down the road from the castle.  It is interesting to see the similarities and differences between living in the city and the small towns.  We got a chance to see the houses and shops up close, not cruising through at 50 kph.

When entering any town, you are subjected to a barrage of road signs.  Some are obvious (like the speed limit) and others are a little vague.  We assume this means “watch for children.”

To me, however, this seems to suggest we should be on the lookout for pedophiles.  C’mon…isn’t that a bit creepy?
